I will post Northern ireland notes
Cause i have nothing to post: )

Cause Of Conflict In northern Ireland
-Divided Loyalties
[1]The PROTESTANTS regrad themselves as BRITISH and want to remain part of U.K
[2]They celebrate the BATTLE OF BOYNE where the Protestant King of England defeated the catholic ex-King of England.
[3]The CATHOLICS wants to be part of the Republic of IRELAND.
[4]They remember the long struggle for HOME RULE by the Irish against the British.
[5]They resent the history of English conquest where Catholics were kidded or treated harshly
EXPLAINATION
This meant that the two communities were proud of their own achievement and were not willing to compromise with the other party. This brought about distrust and misunderstanding, leading to conflict. The loyalty to different countries makes the Protestants and Catholics intolerant of each other.

Lack of opportuntities for social interaction
-Education system
[1]Protestant children attended government schools while catholic children attended private schools.
[2]Protestant children are taught British history, play British sports such as rugby, hockey and are loyal to Britain.
[3]Catholic children learn Irish history and take up Irish sports like hurling, and are loyal to Ireland.
[4]There are privately run mixed schools but these are not popular.
EXPLANATION
As they study in different schools, children from these two communities do not get to meet each other. This meant that they grow up with distrust and hatred to one another. And therefore make them hostile with one another, leading to conflict.

-Separate residential areas
[1]Since the 17th century,Catholics and Protestants have been living in septate residential areas.
EXPLANATION
It reduce the opportunity for social interaction.

-Unequal Employment Opportunities
[1]The Catholics, although academically qualified, were not able to get a job as easily as the Protestants
[2]E.g There where relatively fewer Catholics in the SENIOR POSITIONS in the public and private sectiors.
[3]E.g The number of civil servants was not proportionate to the numbers in the country
EXPLANATION
Catholics felt that they were discriminated againsts.Thismade them believe that the goverment is baised and only cares about the Protestants. They thus went against the government, leading to the conflict.

-Unequal allocation of Housing
[1]City councils providing houses to the people consists largely of Protestants
[2]Priority was given to Protestants in the provision of houses.
[3]E.g In 1968,71% of the local houses in Dungannon were given to Protestants although 53% of the people there were Catholics.
EXPLANATION
The Catholics were frustrated as they had to wait for a longer period of time to get their houses. They though that the government was biased and hated the government, leading to conflict.

-Lack of Voting Rights
[1]Each household was entitled to 2 votes each whereas the companies were entitled to more votes depending on their size.
[2]Since many big companies were owned by Protestants they ended up having more votes than the Catholics.
EXPLANATION
Since more Protestants get to vote, the Catholics were worried that more Protestants would come to power. The Catholics thought that the government was biased, leading to conflict.

Roles of the different groups in the conflict
-Catholic people in Northern Ireland
[1]Organised the Civil Rights Movement in mid 1960s and early 1970s to demand for equal rights and to protest against unfair treatment of the Catholics.E.g Demands for basic rights like housing ,jobs ,education and voting.
[2]E.g. 1972 civil rights march was faced with violent shooting by the British army
[3]Face violent response from the Protestants and the police.

-IRA(Irish Republican Army)-Catholics
[1]Illegal organisation formed largely by Northern Irish Catholics.
[2]Aim is to use violence to drive the British Army out of Northern Ireland.
[3]Responsible for deaths of 2/3 of the more than 3,000 people killed through violence from 1969 to 1993.

-Protestant people in Northern Ireland
[1]Unhappy with the peaceful Civil Rights Movement by the Catholics
[2]Responded to the movement Violently
[3]E.g. petrol-bombed Catholics' homes in middle of the night, forcing catholics to flee.
[4]Local police did nothing to stop the Protestants' actions

-Police in Northern Ireland-Mainly Protestants
[1] Local police did nothing to stop the Protestants actions

-British Army which was mainly Protestants
[1]Aug 1969:British Army units were sent to Northern Ireland to help to keep order.
[2]Searched the Catholics' homes and arrested suspects
[3]On the other hand, did not take action against Protestants.
[4[This led to the catholics losing faith in the British Army.
[5]1972:shot at the peaceful civil rights march, killing 13 civilians and wounding many more-this incident is known as the Bloody Sunday

Consequences of Conflict in Northern Ireland
-Innocent people affected
[1]Many of the Catholics and Protestants were not directly involved in the Conflict.
[2]They just wanted to carry on with their life without much difficulties and problems.
EXPLANAION
However, with the conflict, most of the people affected were innocent people.Example many people killed from 1969 to 1977 due to the violences were not directly involved in the violence.

-People grew with prejudice - Social segregation
[1]The Protestants and Catholics received different education, each praising their own and condemning the deeds of the other.
[2]The violence in the country also mean that the two groups of people believed that their own people were right and the other part was responsible for the conflict in Northern Ireland.
EXPLANATION
This led to growth of hatred and prejudice between the two group for people. With increased hostility violence continued to rise.

-Economic slowdown - Declining Economy
[1]Prior to the Conflict, many overseas companies invested in Northern Ireland.
[2]Tourists came to the country as the country was attractive and peaceful.
EXPLANATION
Both foreign investment and tourism declined as people were afraid for their safety and did not want to come to Northern Ireland. This reduced the revenue for Northern Ireland, leading to economic slowdown.
